These days you're just as likely to log into a secure website using a mobile device as you are on the desktop, so your password manager needs to sync across multiple platforms. Keeper Password Manager & Digital Vault 10 has you covered. It offers apps for Windows, iOS, macOS, Android, and Linux. You can also install it as a browser extension in Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Safari, and even Microsoft Edge. This comprehensive coverage and its strong emphasis on security make it an excellent choice, though it doesn't have every feature found in competing products.

For a list price of $29.99 per year, you can install Keeper on all of your devices. At $39.99 per year, Dashlane and LogMeOnce Password Management Suite Ultimate cost a bit more, while LastPass Premium goes for just $12 per year. Keeper's best deal is the Family Pack. For $59.99 per year, up to five family members get their own, separate Keeper accounts. The family plan also gets you 10GB of online storage for important files. Those with an Individual license can add that 10GB of storage for $9.99 per year. Keeper offers plans all the way up to 1TB.

Getting Started

Like Dashlane 4 and a few others, Keeper is completely free if you use it on just one device. You can kick its tires without committing to the paid edition. If you find you like it and want to use it on all your devices, you can upgrade. Creating an account is a snap. First, enter your email address and strong master password. As you type your master password, Keeper rates its security using a color-coded progress bar. I wish it did the same when you go to change the master password; unfortunately, it does not.

Next up is your security question and answer. I always recommend that you eschew the predefined questions and make up something that you, and only you, know how to answer. In this case, it's especially important, as Keeper creates a second copy of the master data key, encrypted using the security answer. If you somehow manage to forget your master password, you can recover your data based on the security answer, an emailed verification code, and (if enabled) a code from your two-factor authentication system.

The folks at Keeper Security want you to have a smooth experience getting started. Once you've set up your account, you see a Quick Start checklist with four items: create your first record, install the browser extension, upload a file, and configure two-factor authentication. Clicking an item walks you through the necessary steps; once you've finished, a checkmark appears next to the item. It's a nice introduction. I'm impressed that Keeper puts two-factor authentication at the forefront. I'll discuss two-factor options below.

If you're switching to Keeper from another password manager, the ability to import your existing passwords is a huge plus. Keeper can import from LastPass, Dashlane, Sticky Password Premium, and a dozen other competing products. It will also import passwords stored insecurely in Chrome, Firefox, or Opera. For each import choice, there's a popup help window detailing every step of the process; that's a very nice touch.

Password Capture and Replay

Most password managers automatically capture your login credentials when you log in to a secure website. Keeper takes a slightly different approach. It places a lock icon in the username and password fields, and you click the lock to create a new login. Keeper pre-fills the username field with your email address and generates a random password in case you're signing up for a new account. You can give the new entry a friendly name at this point, but you can't assign it to a folder. When you submit your entry, Keeper both saves it and logs you in.

Password replay likewise relies on the lock icon. Clicking the lock gets you a popup menu from which you can log in to the site or create a new record. If you've stored multiple sets of credentials, it displays the most recent one, with an option to choose from a menu of the rest.

When you click the browser toolbar button, you don't immediately see a menu of available logins, the way you do with LastPass 4.0 Premium and others. Rather, you must click the search icon and start typing the name of the item you want. A list of matching records appears, those that match what you've typed so far. Click the appropriate one to go to the site in question, then click the lock icon to log in.

Two-Factor Authentication

The basic protection for your collection of passwords and other data is the master password, which is something you know. Other possible authentication factors are a smartphone (something you have) or a fingerprint (something you are). Once you enable two-factor authentication, nobody can unlock your account using just the master password.

The last time I reviewed Keeper, two-factor authentication only applied the first time you logged in on a new device. In the current edition, you can require two-factor authentication on every login, if you wish.

Keeper supports five types of two-factor authentication, but most users can rule out two of them right away. Some businesses use RSA SecureID tokens for authentication, but you probably don't have one. And if you choose authentication using Duo Security, you'll find that it's only available in Keeper's business-focused edition. Given that SMS-based two-facture authentication is no longer considered secure, drop that one too. That leaves two possibilities.

If you have a smartwatch, Keeper DNA is a convenient solution. When you enter your master password, Keeper sends a notification to the watch. All you need to do is tap the Keeper DNA app on the watch to verify that it's you.

For most users, the go-to second authentication factor is the free Google Authenticator app. Select it, snap the QR code with your app, and you're ready to go. At login, you enter the master password along with the time-sensitive code generated by the app. You can also use Duo Mobile, Twilio Authy, or any other Google Authenticator work-alike.

On devices that support it, you can opt to authenticate using your fingerprint. You'll have to use two-factor authentication the first time you set up a new device, but you can tell Keeper to forego two-factor thereafter, or to not ask again for 30 days.

LastPass offers many two-factor options, from the high-tech Yubikey down to a no-tech paper grid. True Key by Intel Security specializes in multi-factor authentication; if you enable enough other factors, you can use them to reset a lost master password.

Password Generator

As noted, when you click the lock icon in a username or password field, Keeper automatically generates a password. By default, it creates 12-character passwords using all character types. I'd prefer a larger default value, at least 16 characters, or even the 20-character default used by AgileBits 1Password 6. Since the password manager remembers it, you don't need it short and simple. By sliding a control, you can crank the length up to more than 50 characters.

The password generator in LastPass lets you suppress too-similar characters like capital O and digit 0, or generate a pronounceable password like "osionsontist." Both of these options reduce the security of the resulting password; they're only useful in cases where you can't always have the password manager's help. 1Password offers a different option for that situation. You can have it generate a length passphrase, such as "correct horse battery staple." But again, these options are unimportant when the password manager is fully in charge.

Password Organization

The Keeper app and the web-based Keeper Vault both serve to let you manage and organize your passwords. Here you can rename entries for easier searching, and attach files or photos. Expert users can even create custom fields, to handle nonstandard logins.

I'm impressed with the seamless similarity of the application and the web-based vault. They appear nearly identical, and they work in exactly the same way. The mobile apps hew closely to this layout, though they have a few mobile-specific differences.

Most password managers let you impose order on your collection by a system of tags, categories, or folders. LastPass, LogMeOnce, and Sticky Password are among those that let you impose organization at password capture time. LastPass, RoboForm, and Password Boss Premium even let you create nested folders, which become nested menus below the browser toolbar button.

Keeper works a bit differently. You can't assign a folder at capture time, but you can edit any record and enter the desired folder name. I'd be happier with the ability to drag and drop records into folders, especially if I could select several at once.

While it's easy to access the Keeper Vault from the browser toolbar menu, you can also log in from any secure computer. Conversely, if you lose your Internet connection, you can still use the local app to view and manage passwords.

Password Sharing

Promiscuous password sharing is a bad thing, but there are situations when you need to share. For example, a couple might share their joint bank account's login, or parents might share a Netflix login with the kids. Keeper gives you full control over sharing passwords and folders. If you've shared a folder,

To share a password or folder, you simply click the sharing icon and enter the email address of the recipient. A recipient who doesn't have Keeper gets an email with a link to set up a free account. Once the recipient has accepted the shared item, you get a notification. Clicking the sharing icon presents a list of all your shared items. If necessary, you can edit an item to revoke sharing.

By default, the recipient can use and view the shared login, but can't edit it or share it with others. As appropriate, you can enable editing or sharing, or even make the recipient the owner of the item.

Some password managers offer a kind of deferred sharing that kicks in only in the event of your demise. With LastPass or Dashlane, you enable emergency access for one or more trusted friends, and define a wait time, up to 30 days for LastPass, 60 for Dashlane. When that friend requests access, you get a notification. If you're not dead after all, you can revoke emergency access during the wait time (and start looking for a more reliable friend). You can configure LogMeOnce to withhold the deferred share until you've supplied the company with a death certificate.

My contact at Keeper Security told me that the company's designers consider this feature a security risk. He points out that Keeper is totally zero-knowledge, meaning there's no way to supply an inheritor with the master password for the deceased. That's definitely true, but my understanding of what the other products do does not involve just handing the inheritor a password, but rather simply giving access to the deferred share. Keeper Security's position is that you're better off storing the master password under seal with a law firm.

…And Digital Vault

So far I've discussed this product's password management features, but right there in the name you can see that it's also a digital vault. Just what does that mean?

SecurityWatch

As noted, you can attach a file or photo to any data record. You can also create a data record for the specific purpose of getting a file into your secure storage. While Keeper isn't a backup utility per se, putting a file in the vault does serve to create a secure backup. More importantly, that file is now available on all your devices. You can download it as needed, and you can also share it with other users.

If you've signed up for the Family plan, with its 10GB of storage, you and your family members can attach all the files you want, until you fill up your storage. On an Individual license you get five attachments for free. If you want more, you must pony up that $9.99 per year for 10GB of storage.

What's Not Here

Keeper covers all the basics of password management, and some of the advanced features as well. It doesn't fill personal information into Web forms for you, though, which is something many users have come to expect from a password manager.

Like LastPass, Dashlane, LogMeOnce, and a few others, Keeper can display a list of your passwords, identifying any weak and duplicate ones. This feature wasn't present the last time I reviewed Keeper. Just click the Audit icon for the list. You can click any item to visit the site, log in, and change your password; Keeper will capture the change.

Unlike the other three I mentioned, Keeper does not attempt to automate the process of changing passwords. Or rather, it offers that feature in a limited way. At present, it only works on iOS, and only in Safari or the built-in browser. If all your ducks are in a row, you'll get a Change Password button when you invoke Keeper at the screen where you enter the old and new passwords.

Mobile Features

Keeper's look and layout are very consistent across all platforms. On mobile devices, it has a few additional features. Under both Android and iOS, its self-destruct feature can wipe out all local data after five failed login attempts. That's just the local data; it has no effect on your data in the cloud. By default, the Android edition suppresses screenshots. I had to turn off that feature in order to capture a few screens.

The mobile app includes a built-in browser. With full control of the browser, Keeper has no trouble capturing and replaying passwords. However, most of us probably don't want to switch away from our favorite browser. No problem; Keeper can handle that.

The KeeperFill feature lets Keeper capture and fill passwords in popular browsers; under Android it also works with app passwords. For Android devices, you install KeeperFill as a specialized keyboard. Under iOS, you enable it by tapping the share box, tapping more, and turning on the feature. To capture or fill a password in an Android browser, you tap a lock icon in the corner of the browser. On an iOS device, you tap the share box and select KeeperFill. Simple!

Comprehensive, Secure Coverage

Keeper Password Manager & Digital Vault 10 works on all popular platforms and browsers. Its designers keep security and privacy at the forefront, which means it doesn't have some features that they consider risky. But it does a fine job managing your passwords, and is more consistent across platforms than most of its competitors. It's a good choice if you value security more than fancy features.

The venerable LastPass Premium offers many of the same features as Keeper, and costs less. LogMeOnce Password Management Suite Ultimate packs in a huge number of features. Dashlane is the slickest of the bunch, with very good handling of web forms as well as passwords. Sticky Password Premium's unusual features include application password management and support for a vast number of browsers. These are our Editors' Choice password managers, but Keeper is definitely worth consideration as well.
